Meet Amelia Miazad: A Speaker at Our Upcoming ESGx Event on August 18th
Amelia Miazad is both the founding Director and Senior Research Fellow of the Business in Society Institute at Berkeley Law and teaches courses at Berkeley Law School. Although, before beginning her work in higher education, Amelia practiced law for nearly ten years and received her JD from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
As the Business in Society Institute’s founding director Miazad believes, “Corporate Lawyers have to consider what is right, not just what is legal. Companies now have to think about environmental, social, and governance issues, and that falls squarely within the role of the general counsel.” The institute studies the changing role that companies are playing in society, a topic that is being debated by legal scholars, policymakers, courts, the media, and corporate leaders. The Institute’s mission is to prepare lawyers to address this new landscape. To better understand the changing legal landscape, the institute is hosting international and U.S. symposia, conducting research, developing student internships, and creating new curriculum and courses. It’s one of the first law school programs in the country to tackle these issues head-on.
In furtherance of The Business in Society Institute’s mission, Miazad teaches courses at Berkeley Law and in executive education programs that address the intersection of sustainability, corporate governance, and compliance. Miazad’s recent publications explore sustainability and ESG as a process for overseeing risk and a powerful tool for transforming corporate culture. Miazad also leads the institute’s research, curriculum development, and programming.
Miazad’s curriculum and scholarship rely on input from experts who are implementing environmental and social considerations into their business practices.
